The Tree at the Crossroads, A New Year Rite of Vision and Release with Hekate

Hekate dances before a tree too immense to fully see.

I place three candles on the earth and light them.
I light these flames at the roots of the world tree.
Flame of the crossroads. Flame of the soul. Flame of the future.
Hekate Enodia, Hekate Phosphoros, Hekate Trimorphis.
Help me understand these messages.
I place The Hermit card (reversed) before the white candle and invoke Hekate:
Enodia, show me where I resist stillness.
Help me hear the wisdom that lives beneath the silence.
I place the Two of Cups
(reversed) before the red candle and invoke Hekate:
Aglaos and Vrimo, illuminate the wounds I must heal.
Why is love withheld? How may I open to connection again?
I place the Knight of Pentacles before the black candle and invoke Hekate:
Psychi Kosmou and Hthonia, show me the gate that opens.
How shall I plant and nourish the seeds of growth?
I place a pomegranate, a key, and an offering cup near the candles.
I place the Four of Swords before the pomegranate and invoke Hekate:
Fruit of the Underworld, sealed and sweet,
I will not force the path.
Let the hidden potential ripen in silence.
Let me lay down the sword and welcome sacred rest.
I place The Magician card before the key and invoke Hekate:
Hekate Klidouchos, Keeper of Keys,
May I find what I need.
Teach me to use what I already carry.
Let will and wisdom meet.
I place the King of Pentacles before the offering cup and invoke Hekate:
I return the gifts that once helped me.
Help me release control.
Let my spirit grow where fear once ruled.
I inscribe a circle on the ground.
I place the Ten of Pentacles within the circle and invoke Hekate:
Show me what will take root.
What vision is ready to come into form?
I place the Death card within the circle and invoke Hekate:
Hekate of Many Faces,
Show me who I must become.
Guide me through the shedding.
Let the old self die with grace.
I await a vision...

I kindle fire in the cauldron and pour water into the basin.
I pass the Two of Wands
(reversed) through the flames of the cauldron and invoke Hekate:
Cauldron of transformation,
Receive what I must release.
Hekate, help me name what is false and what I fear,
and give me strength to cast them into the flame.
I pour water from the basin over the Five of Pentacles
(reversed) and invoke Hekate:
Water of life, water of mercy.
Hekate, show me what must be cleansed.
Let this basin carry away sorrow, shame, and isolation.
Let resilience and grace take their place.
I pour water on my hands and splash my face. Then I offer thanks to Hekate:
The flame returns to the root.
The path returns to silence.
The goddess remains.
May what was seen unfold in time.
Hail and farewell, Hekate,
Light-bringer, Key-holder, Guide through shadow.
Postscript

When I performed this rite, the visualization came quickly and vividly. I saw Hekate dancing before the World Tree which, in the darkness, was vast beyond sight. I recited Hekate's mantra and felt the damp earth and warm air around me. The candles flickered over each card. The pomegranate, key, and cup were real. I inscribed the circle with white chalk and felt Hekate communing with me.

When I laid down the Death card, I asked what part of me must die so I can live more fully. But then I noticed: The Ten of Pentacles had come first. Perhaps transformation isn't a prerequisite for change; perhaps change will begin to take root before I fully understand who I must become.

The Five of Pentacles, washed in water, offered hope. I saw the possibility of returning to a place of light, of finding a new home, within myself or elsewhere.

I gazed at The Two of Cups, its candle still burning brightly even though it had became shorter, and I asked Hekate to help me find love and connection and to heal whatever has kept me distant from others.

Something shifted. I felt a quiet turning and heard the beginning of something. Now I wait in stillness to understand the rest.

New Year's Tarot Spread

This morning, I began the year by performing a tarot reading using Arith Harger’s The Altar of Hekate - Rune Divination Method, a spread that invites reflection, transformation, and the wisdom of the liminal goddess. The cards are read in ten sacred positions, each one symbolically tethered to phases of ritual work at an altar.

Opening the Crossroads
Card 1 - White candle, new moon, our inner temple. Asking Enodia for advice and wisdom regarding the next cycle.
The Hermit reversed suggests that I'm resisting stillness and failing to listen to my inner guidance, that I'm not embracing the isolation and silence I currently need. I'm seeking sensible action and external answers when I should be seeking higher wisdom.
Card 2 - Red candle, red moon, the sacred flames of Aglaos and Vrimo. Illuminating the path to regeneration and helping defend against blocks to your potential.
The Two of Cups reversed suggests that I've never really accepted that no one will ever love me back. I'm not seeking romantic love, but the love with those around me who make up the fabric and melody of a meaningful life. I've never figured out what makes me so vile and unlovable. I've just had to accept that only a few people care and that the love I give is what I should focus on. This absence of connection must be healed in some way.
Card 3 - Black candle, dark moon. Purification of home and self before transition to next cycle; Psychi Kosmou and Hthonia reveal which gate will open for you.
The Knight of Pentacles indicates responsibility and duty, and the satisfaction of being responsible and dutiful. These qualities reflect who I am, but the other cards suggest I may need to redirect my energies. It may indicate continuing with my current situation, but tending it differently so sprouts of new life may begin to cover that ploughed field. I dreamed of a home last night and the night before. It may be time to nest and make a home in which I can grow.
Descent to the Inner Temple
Card 4 - Pomegranate of Hthonia to find yourself. Revealing the hidden fruit of the Underworld, your potential; don’t force yourself onto a path you’re not suited for.
The Four of Swords suggests that my potential can't be found through action now. I must lay down the sword and accept this period of dormancy. The pomegranate, symbol of the underworld, and this card ask me to be still, rest, and let the fruit ripen in silence.
Card 5 - Keys of Kliduchos. Revealing the keys to your soul, your journey, your hidden potential.
The Magician suggests I have access to all the keys and tools I need even if they feel distant now. Perhaps they will become visible to me in this season of stillness.
Card 6 - Offering cup. Releasing gifts that might prevent the unfolding and growth, unveiling the next cycle to gain confidence in it.
The King of Pentacles suggests that my attachment to material control and outward stability is a shield, but that it now cages me. I don’t need to give up security, but I must let go of my fear of losing it. I need to seek spiritual growth.

Vision from the Deep
Card 7 - The magic circle, active part of the altar. Obtaining a concrete image of what to expect in the next cycle.
The Ten of Pentacles suggests I will find a situation in which to become rooted and strong and giving. I will establish a foundation, reconnect with tradition, claim a place within a community, and gain a sense of belonging that will bless both me and others.
Card 8 - Hekate of many epithets. We are too fluid to be the same person throughout our lives; this rune or card shows the identity we must embrace for this cycle.
Death suggests that my old self is dissolving while a new one is rising. Hekate as psychopomp will guide me through this transformation. Like the figures in the card, I should surrender and welcome this transformation. My old identity cannot accommodate the future that is arriving.
Release and Return
Card 9 - Cauldron. Burn everything no longer needed on the altar, refine the vision you've gained, and keep that vision in the fertile silence of the Underworld for future use.
The Two of Wands reversed shows hesitation, fear of taking the wrong action. I should surrender doubt of this vision and wait trustfully in the fertile silence for the vision to come to fruition.
Card 10 - Water. Release the creative energies you invoked for this ritual, cleanse the altar and yourself. Dissolve the ritual circle and return to the flow of life and self.
The Five of Pentacles reversed represents emerging from scarcity, shame, and the ache of being out in the cold. It shows me reclaiming a sense of self worth. Let the water wash away old wounds and patterns of behavior that keep me isolated. Let resilience and self-trust flow into me, carrying me into a new future.

Turning the Reading into a Rite
How do I turn the lessons of this reading into a ritual. What ritual actions will solidify the vision in my mind and in reality?
  • The Hermit asks: What kind of meditation will help me cultivate stillness and hear the voice of inner wisdom?
  • The Two of Cups reversed raises the question: How do I face this ache in my character, this yearning for connection? Will it dissolve with the transformation that is coming?
  • The Knight of Pentacles wonders: Would creating an altar space be sufficient to help me tend my life with more care and intention?
  • The Four of Swords whispers: What kind of rest do I truly need, especially when illness has already taken so much time from gainful employment?
  • The Magician echoes: What kind of stillness will allow me to recognize the keys I already possess?
  • The King of Pentacles challenges: How do I transmute my desire for material control into a deeper search for spiritual growth?
  • With the Ten of Pentacles and Death, I wonder: Is this transformation inevitable? Do I trust it to unfold, no matter what I do?
  • The Two of Wands reversed urges me to ask: Is it truly possible to release fear? What symbol can I burn?
  • And finally, the Five of Pentacles reversed asks: How do I release the old story of exclusion and scarcity that has shaped me since childhood? What symbol can I wash away?
Would candles, breath, and word be enough? Or is this a ritual that can only unfold in the astral temple, with Hekate guiding me and revealing the symbolic objects I must release?

Hekate Spread

This spread was inspired by The Hymn to Veiled Wisdom and conducted using the Tarot of Oneness by Robin Voisey. Each position is aligned with an aspect of Divine Wisdom and guided by a devotional question. The reading explores themes of health, guilt, creativity, fear, community, and divine trust.

1. Ζηρυνθία (Zirinthía) - Guide me through veils untold...
Question: What am I not seeing clearly about my health and burnout?
The Tower. I see myself falling from a great height, struck by lightning that flings me from the tower’s pinnacle. This is the card of unexpected disaster, often triggered by emotionalism and unclear thinking.

My current physical and emotional state may be unsustainable. The collapse I fear is not just external (job, health), but internal: outdated beliefs about success, productivity, and what “being well” means. The universe is removing what no longer serves me. Burnout may be the consequence of structures built from self-sacrifice or over-responsibility. Their fall is painful, but necessary.

Guidance: Embrace the fall. This is sacred demolition, not failure. Let yourself grieve and let go.

2. Βριμοῖ (Vrímo) - Shake perception’s core...
Question: What truth must I face about guilt and work?
Three of Swords. I see my reflection in shattered glass. My figure is a dark silhouette. My heart is black but glows red with pain. Is the image real or illusory?

I am deeply wounded, physically, emotionally, spiritually. Much of that pain comes from trying to "manage" rather than feel. I've been suppressing the extent of my hurt. The guilt I carry for resting, or disappointing others (especially my boss), is cutting deeper than the situation itself. The illusion is that I owe my well-being to others.

Guidance: Let yourself break. Cry. Name the pain. Stop gaslighting your own exhaustion.

3. Φωσφόρος (Phōsphoros) - Kindle fires of art’s creation...
Question: What is the role of the Eilat Tarot project in my life?
Synchronicity. A golden statue stands on a globe, reaching toward the sun. A radiant bird fills the sky, its light reflected in the sea. A single feather has fallen at the statue’s feet.

This project is not nonsense. It’s sacred play, mystical, intuitive, and not meant to be rationalized. I should trust its unfolding without demanding validation. The fallen feather is a divine sign: “You don’t need proof. You only need presence.” The golden statue may represent me, already standing on wholeness, still reaching toward meaning.

Guidance: Ask for signs. Stop overthinking. Your creativity is a prayer.

4. σωτηρία (Sotería) - Wisdom you bestow...
Question: What do I need to release to be emotionally free?
Seven of Swords. A predator waits above me on a tree branch. The world is dark and silent. I am afraid."

I may be hiding from myself. There’s fear-driven isolation here, born from trauma, perfectionism, or shame. I anticipate betrayal, so I prepare for it constantly. I don’t have to figure it all out alone. My inner predator is a defense mechanism, but it may be keeping love and support away.

Guidance: Release the need to protect yourself from everyone. Begin small, but practice vulnerability.

5. Ορίζοντα (Urízoda) - Knower of the unknown...
Question: Where will I find the loving community I long for?
Embodiment of Cups. (King) A crown and ship-shaped medal hang from a ribbon. A curtain parts. A fish leaps before the crown. Am I meant to wear these symbols?

Emotional maturity and self-acceptance are my path to community. It’s not about finding loving people, but about becoming someone who feels worthy of belonging. Community mirrors my emotional tone. The more I live in truth, the more authentic relationships will flow toward me. The leaping fish suggests a sign will come soon, perhaps through water, dreams, or feeling.

Guidance: Lead with heart, not armor.

6. πολύτιμος μου (Polýtimos mou) - Precious One, embrace me...
Question: How can I trust the divine and feel held?
Nine of Pentacles. A bird is about to alight on a birdhouse hanging in the trees. Does a home await me too?

This indicates a future of safety, serenity, and sovereignty. The birdhouse speaks of homecoming, both spiritual and literal. I am not as far from peace as I feel. Even now, something within me is already at rest. I only need to return to it.

Guidance: Trust the spiritual foundations you've built. You are already in communion, even if it feels quiet.

This spread appears to reveal a familiar arc of soul-work, unfolding in six movements:

1. Destruction of false structures (The Tower)
2. Acknowledgment of the wound (Three of Swords)
3. Opening to mystery and meaning (Synchronicity)
4. Letting go of control and fear (Seven of Swords)
5. Emotional rebirth into connection (Embodiment of Cups)
6. Return to grounded, graceful being (Nine of Pentacles)

This reading offers insight and initiation, a movement from collapse to wholeness, guided by the voices of different aspects of Divine Wisdom.

Make Your Blessings Count

Blessed is he who not only counts his blessings, but makes his blessings count.
- a refrigerator magnet

I’ve been feeling grateful lately—but also a little uneasy about whether I’m doing enough with the good I’ve been given. I’m thoroughly enjoying many aspects of life in the U.S., the comfort, the ease, the many luxuries, because each one feels like an enormous blessing. Still, I worry that I’m not showing enough gratitude. I’m not putting enough heart into my job, not taking enough walks to enjoy the weather and scenery, and not making an effort to meet people or make friends.

So I did a reading with The Ocean Tarot, a mermaid-themed deck that reminds me of Eilat, the jumping-off point for my journey back to the US.

The question I asked was, "How can I rise up and align myself with the blessings I am receiving?"

Fives showed up frequently in this reading. That’s the sefirah גְּבוּרָה (Gevurah), Strength. These challenges may be necessary to help me grow. Fives often represent spiritual transition. (Across various traditions, fives are generally understood as points of instability, challenge, or disruption that invite growth.)

CARD 1 – The Blessings Present
What blessings or gifts are currently flowing into my life? (It feels like there are so many blessings, I could have pulled a dozen cards.)

Page of Pearls (Cups)
This is the kid who is appreciative and open-hearted toward whatever or whomever he encounters. In this deck, the Page is admiring a glowing pearl. The blessings of my new life feel precious, hard-won, and still dazzling. Maybe the real blessing is that my heart can feel wonder and grace. There are seahorses all around him, symbols of patience, fatherhood, and gentleness. The seahorses remind me to approach life gently.
In my Eilat Tarot, this card is called: Servant of Grace

CARD 2 – What Holds Me Back
What pattern, attitude, or distraction keeps me from aligning with these blessings?

Four of Pearls (Cups)
This card is such a contrast to the last one. It represents someone who isn’t paying attention to the blessings around him, or the additional divine gift being offered. Although I’m aware of all the blessings I’m receiving, I reflexively retreat from opportunities. The fourth pearl, descending with rays of light from the ocean’s surface, evokes a spiritual prompting to stay awake and grateful.
In my Eilat Tarot, this card is called: Before the Heart Opens

CARD 3 – Embodying Heart and Presence
How can I bring more heart into my work and daily actions?

Five of Pearls (Cups)
This is someone who needs to see not just his losses and what he still has, but needs to "cross the bridge to the castle of dreams," i.e. aspire to the next great goal he can reach. He should not just survive hardship, but dare to hope again. In this deck, there are three broken eggs and two live jellyfish, suggesting sensitivity and vulnerability. I'm being invited to move through emotion into a new purpose. The adult jellyfish in the background suggest emotional maturity, reminding me I can move forward even while remaining sensitive. Bringing heart into daily actions means not fearing emotional messiness, but using it to deepen compassion and connection.
In my Eilat Tarot, this card is called: Crossing the Waters
(I might rename it The Mourner's Path)

CARD 4 – Reconnecting with the World
What will help me engage with nature and people with more joy and aliveness?

Two of Treasure (Pentacles)
Usually this card means being undecided about which path to commit to—but in this deck, the figure resembles The World card. It’s a portrait of joyful receiving rather than striving. It suggests saying “yes” more often, and being a little less guarded.
In my Eilat Tarot, this card is called: The Tension of Two Worlds
(I might rename it The Moment Between Steps)

CARD 5 – The Path of Rising
What does it look like to rise up and live in alignment with the life I’ve been given?

Five of Spears (Swords)
This is a surprising card in this position. It’s about the sore winner, someone who clings to resentment or conflict. But in The Medieval Cat Tarot, it can also indicate the support of true friends, releasing shame, internal healing, or making amends. Maybe here, it points toward independence, not desperately seeking love or fearing scarcity. It may be a call to walk forward unburdened by the past, to release not just people but also narratives tied to old pain. Once again, I’m reminded of what my father tried to teach me for over forty years, a lesson that’s become something of a personal motto, even if it’s not quite 100% true: “No one is your friend, and money’s the only thing that matters.”
In my Eilat Tarot, this card is called: The Severed Bond
(I might rename it Beyond the Battle)

This reading reminds me: it’s not enough to count my blessings. I must carry them forward, with presence and purpose.

A Foundation I Didn’t Know I Was Building

I pulled two cards the other day, asking what I most needed to know. They seemed to contradict one another: Desolation and The Star.

Then I realized they perfectly described the threshold I have been crossing.
Desolation speaks of endings. For me, it marks the recognition that it was finally time to leave Israel and the beginning of trusting that returning may turn out all right.

Now, ten days after returning to the United States, I feel hope. I have come back stronger than I expected, less afraid of people, less afraid of life, and quietly grateful for the confidence that comes from once again living in a culture I understand.
The two cards share several symbols, including the Egyptian hieroglyph for a gate, the Hebrew letter Peh, and Saturn. Yet they tell very different stories. In Desolation, which Vieira associates with the Two of Wands, the gate marks an ending. In The Star, it opens toward possibility. The same symbols accompany two different moments in a single journey.

I once imagined that leaving Israel would make me cling more tightly to Jewish observance. Instead, something quieter happened. During those difficult years, I had absorbed an Israeli way of being Jewish, something lived rather than performed. I hadn't realized I was building a foundation while I was there. Only after leaving did I discover it was strong enough to carry with me.

Perhaps that's what these two cards are trying to tell me. One life had ended, but the life that followed would not begin from nothing. The foundation remained.

This isn't exile.

It's integration.

Dream Doorway

Last night, I dreamed I was standing in a threshold—stuck there. My feet wouldn’t move and I was unable to step forward. When I woke up, the feeling lingered.
I’ve thought about leaving Israel countless times, even come close, yet here I am still here. Still hovering in that in-between space. The dream felt like a message, but I needed more clarity. So I turned to my tarot deck.

I drew the Five of Cups reversed, Eight of Pentacles reversed, and the Tower reversed.

Even before analyzing the cards, I could see how they mirrored my situation. Dreaming of being stuck in a doorway captures everything: neither fully in nor out, caught in the space between staying and leaving.

The Cards:

Five of Cups Reversed – This card is about moving past grief, regret, or disappointment. Maybe I am letting go of something... past hopes, past pain, past beliefs about what living here was supposed to be? But if I’ve begun to let go, why am I not moving forward?

Eight of Pentacles Reversed – Stagnation. Lack of progress. Fear. I recognize that I haven't and may never integrate into Israeli life, and yet I can't commit to giving up either. Am I holding myself back because I doubt my ability to start over somewhere new?

The Tower Reversed – Resistance to change. Trying to avoid upheaval. The Tower reversed doesn’t bring sudden devastation but rather a slow, creeping realization that a change must happen. I’ve known for a long time that my values and preferences don’t fully align with Israeli society, and it has become clear that my current life here isn’t sustainable. But knowing isn’t the same as acting. And acting means accepting that there’s no going back. Oy va voy!

The Message

I’m ready to move on, but fear is causing me to hesitate. Fear of upheaval. Fear of failure. Fear of letting go of the place that has shaped me.

But the dream and the reading both make something clear: I am still standing in the doorwayand if I don’t step forward, I will remain stuck between two worlds, belonging to neither. It’s time to decide.

Tarot Insights on the Attempted Assassination of President Trump

After the attempted assassination of President Trump on Saturday 13 July 2024, I decided to pull two tarot cards to gain insight into the situation. As my reading skills have become rusty, I hope that practicing on public figures may help me redevelop those skills. For my first question, I asked how Mr. Trump was feeling after the experience. The card I drew was The Hanged Man. This card, with its figure suspended upside down and the figure's orange hair hanging loose, immediately caught my attention. The Hanged Man typically signifies gaining a new perspective and can also symbolize a sacrifice for a greater good. The halo around the figure's head is meant to emphasize enlightenment and a shift in perception, but I couldn't help thinking of it as "Orange Man's" halo.

In this context, The Hanged Man suggests that the attempted assassination may have caused President Trump to experience a profound change in how he views his role and responsibilities. The ordeal could be prompting him to reconsider the motivations for his actions and decisions from a new vantage point, possibly coming to see his position as requiring a sacrifice or struggle primarily for the benefit of the nation.

This card also suggests the experience of being suspended in time and powerless to affect external events. After the shooter fired his weapon, there were a few seconds in which everything might have changed for Mr. Trump, his audience, and perhaps the whole nation. There was also a period of suspense for the audience who waited to see if Mr. Trump was still alive. From now on, the Hanged Man will suggest to me a pivotal moment, in which the future hangs in the balance.

The second question I posed was how Mr. Trump experienced that terrifying moment. The card drawn was the Seven of Wands, which depicts a figure standing strong and resolute against adversity. In the Morgan-Greer deck, the figure appears determined and unbowed, reflecting fearlessness and resilience. I recalled that in the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck, Pamela Colman Smith portrayed the figure with mismatched shoes, a small but significant detail. The Erenberg Tarot highlights this peculiarity, which adds an amusing coincidence to my reading. When the Secret Service agents threw themselves over President Trump, they knocked off his shoes, and after they helped him up, we heard Mr. Trump say, "Let me get my shoes." The Seven of Wands, therefore, not only indicates a person standing firm in the face of danger but also aligns with the actual events in a strikingly literal way. This card suggests that in that chaotic moment, President Trump was resilient, focused, prepared to assert his leadership, and concerned for his mission and his supporters.

These two cards, The Hanged Man and the Seven of Wands, offer intriguing insights into President Trump's experience and state of mind during and after the attempted assassination. The Hanged Man points to a shift in perspective as a result of the event, while the Seven of Wands highlights his strength and determination in the face of immediate danger. Through these cards, we can glimpse the complex interplay of resilience and reflection in his response to that brief but momentous event.

Egipcios Kier - Nelise Carbonare Vieira's Interpretations

Although I am still learning the meanings and symbolism of the Egipcios Kier Tarot Deck, I enjoy doing large, ten-card readings for myself with the deck. Usually, I rely on my intuition and creativity-- this time, however, I decided to rely on the meanings set forth on NCV's website. Since the website is in Portuguese, I had to use Google to translate her text.
My Situation: 3 The Empress

Summary: This is a period of establishing new foundations and structures. You will be organizing and setting concrete objectives for long-term stability. Opportunities will emerge to lay down roots and build a stable foundation. This card often indicates significant life changes that bring material or emotional stability.

An Inquiry with the Oneness Tarot

Upon receiving the Tarot of Oneness, a beautiful and alluring deck, I expected to have an effortless rapport with it. However, my assumption was challenged during a recent reading using a spread by Arith Harger, where the messages proved elusive.

So my friend, Yael, suggested that I engage the deck in dialogue through a series of questions. In this post, I consider the insights that emerged from this unusual interaction.
Who are you?
I am the Queen of Cups gazing into the cup of vision, the primordial sea, our collective soul. Beyond my compassion and understanding, I am also a source of creative solutions.

What kind of questions do you most like to consider?
As the Page of Wands, I am filled with wonder and excitement, preferring questions that are grounded in reality, but that also seek the spark of the divine in this world.

What are your strengths?
As the Nine of Pentacles, I offer a time of serene contemplation and wholeness. I can lift you beyond current limitations, nurture gratitude, and foster a sense of self worth.

What are your weaknesses?
With the Three of Wands, I acknowledge my limitations in the realm of action and implementation of plans. Although I can share my foresight and guidance, I cannot travel the path with you. You must be your own agent of change.

How do you see me?
I see you as the Ace of Pentacles, a seed bursting with potential, brimming with the creative energy and the capacity to nurture growth and abundance—but only if you seize this time!

What can I do to create a strong connection between us?
Make offerings of fresh water to me as Temperance. Recognize me as a bridge between earthly and celestial realms. Cultivate patience, balance, and reverence when interacting with me to create a harmonious bond between us.

What mindset should I take upon myself when I reach out to you so I understand your answers better?
Embody the symbolism of the Ace of Swords by approaching me with clarity of intention and mental focus. Let my insights resonate deeply within you.

These insights from the Tarot of Oneness offer me a path to self discovery and self improvement. As I continue to work with this magical deck, I will embrace not just its answers, but the transformative power of inquiry itself.

The Magician's Tools - Guidance from Ermiti and Nienna

I did a reading today, to elucidate the message that The Magician card gave me yesterday.

My first question was how to sense and connect with the power available to me. I am learning from HearthWitch on YouTube how to sense energy in things in places
—but how do I sense the greater force that fills the universe and that presumably my own heart as well?

The first card, which fell from the deck, was the Four of Swords. This card shows us a sarcophagus carved to represent a person at rest. Tree branches shelter the figure, but the starry sky is visible above and sheathed swords hang from the tree’s branches. This card suggests setting aside one's ordinary tools and turning from external work to explore one’s inner being. It reminds me of the Alexander Technique, in which become more aware of your body and regain your most natural movements, rather than focus on resuming a task that currently causes you pain. I believe the advice of this card right now is to become aware of my innate inclinations, explore the anatomy of my soul, and deepen the connection between my soul and the universe.
Secondly, I asked to be shown my own goals and received the Knight of Wands, a fiery and energetic figure in the Robin Wood tarot. Knights lived for an ideal and the helmet of this knight is shaped like a lion’s head, suggesting the lion of Judah. It may indicate my aspiration to learn and teach Torah, sometimes referred to as “black fire upon white fire.”
My next question was where to focus my efforts. I pulled Strength, number eight of the Major Arcana, and found another lion! In the Robin Wood Tarot's version of this card, a mature woman gently strokes the lion and opens his mouth. Her skirt is filled with flowers that she has collected and she has made a wreath of flowers for her hair. Her hands caress the lion, opening his mouth to speak to her. Torah is sometimes (rather disturbingly) compared to a woman whom we undress and explore, but here it is the lion who is caressed and his mouth opened so we can hear the voice of Torah (קול הטארוט). This card may suggest harnessing inner strength and gentleness to explore and those mysteries.
My next question was how to nurture my ability to promote my skills for financial stability. I received The Emperor, number four of the Major Arcana card, which depicts a mature man firmly seated on his throne. His attire reflects success and mastery. His skills have been recognized and his achievements affirmed. Becoming aware of one’s own power can ultimately lead to recognition and success.
The final card, the Four of Wands, fell from the deck in response to my question about finding gainful employment that will allow me creative expression. This card signifies celebration, communication, and union. The wands supporting a wedding canopy mirror the s'chach (סכך) of branches in the first card and symbolize a transition from self-exploration to public expression, celebrating the journey of the soul.

The repeated appearance of the number four this reading is significant: the Four of Swords, the 4+4 of Strength, The Emperor, and the Four of Wands. These cards signify stability, foundation, and the ability to build and manifest in the physical realm.

For me personally, the Four of Swords and the Four of Wands are signs that Ermiti and Nienna have messages for me.
These two beings are reminders of divine power in human form and the feminine expression of that power.

Ermiti, the “serpentine guardian of the waters of the west,” embodies not only strength and protection but also introspection and the exploration of inner realms. In this reading, the Four of Swords resonates with Ermiti's encouragement to set aside external distractions and turn inward. Ermiti's serpentine form suggests a winding and labyrinthine journey into the depths of self, mirroring the path of self-discovery indicated by this card. Just as Ermiti dwells in the the waters of the west, the Four of Swords invites me to explore the depths of my soul's reservoir, tapping into the wellspring of inner wisdom and strength.

Nienna, the goddess of compassion, whose “song of lamentation is woven into the fabric of the world,” lends her compassionate and nurturing energy to the Four of Wands. While this card signifies public celebration, Nienna adds notes of compassion and empathy. Her song reminds me of the importance of connecting with others on a deep emotional level. As I transition from self-exploration to public expression, Nienna's influence encourages me to infuse my creative endeavors with compassion and understanding. My journey isn't only about personal success, but also about uplifting and comforting others through my work.

Ermiti and Nienna serve as guiding spirits in this reading, emphasizing the significance of inner exploration and compassion. Ermiti encourages me to delve into the depths of self-awareness and harness inner strength, while Nienna reminds me to infuse my creative journey with empathy and a deep connection to humanity. Their presence underscores the spiritual and compassionate aspects of my quest for personal and creative fulfillment.

Reading for Myself

These three cards address the first three categories covered in an online course called LifeBook.

The first three LifeBook sessions were thought provoking and inspiring, but I've had to ask for a refund because the video lessons (and even the audio only lessons) buffer so frequently that it made watching them absurdly time consuming.

In the meantime, I have my tarot cards to help me all twelve of the LifeBook categories, as well as anything else life delivers to my door.

What I need to know about health and fitness?

The High Priestess indicates that I have been correct to listen to my my body's own wisdom about making changes more slowly than I had been. It will take discipline and self-mastery to become the priestess of my body, I must always remember that my body is sacred and should be treated gently. I must listen to my intuition and not sabotage myself.

What I need to know about my intellectual life?

The appearance of The Magician suggest that I have all the tools I need for an exciting intellectual life. He has the sword of intellect before him and also the other tools and gifts of life. If I develop a clear vision and  focus, I can achieve anything. I should allow my spiritual life to enrich my intellectual life.

How can I improve my emotional intelligence?

The World tells me to embrace Life, expect and be open to positive experiences, and rejoice in being alive. I should allow my experiences to inform my emotional intelligence. (At some point, I'll pull a few more cards for this topic.)

Two spreads for selecting a spiritual counselor

I just scheduled an hour-long spiritual counseling session with someone I've watched on YouTube a few times. Our appointment isn't for another sixteen days, which has given me time to second-guess my decision.

So I tried to create a spread to determine if working with this counselor would be beneficial. (I selected The High Priestess as the counselor's significator, because she's a guide and because she has very black hair.)

First reading
These were my questions:
  • As I approach, does she want to help me? 5 Swords
Not a pretty card, it usually indicates a mean person, a "sore winner," who enjoys inflicting both defeat and humiliation. This doesn't look like the image of a spiritual counselor; maybe it's saying more about me as I approach her. Is there any indication that my situation would make me an "attractive" client to her?A positive spin would be that she wants to take negative thoughts (swords) from me.
  • Does she have the resources to help me? Queen Swords
Her rank indicates she has the experience to help, her sword indicates she has the knowledge and communication skills to help, and her open hand may suggest that she wants to help. But what might she do with the sword in her right hand if I reach for her left hand?
  • Can she intuit what help I need? 6 Wands
The card suggests that as long as I’m cooperating with her, she’ll be able to successfully intuit any needs that I am unaware of or unable to articulate.
  • Will working with her put me on the right path? Tower
This can be a terrible card, but could be interpreted positively, as enlightenment and recognition of what part of my foundation needs to be replaced.

I realized that, in the first reading, I'd committed the cardinal error of asking yes/no questions, so I did a second spread, which included a significator for myself, the Four of Wands, which appeared in a reading earlier today. I understood it to mean that my energy and creativity are restricted.

Second reading

These were my questions for the second reading:
  • What does the counselor want from me? 10 of Pentacles
The cynical part of me answered: 'She wants my coins.' The more creative part of me thinks she's seeking wholeness, both for me and for herself.
  • What do I want from her? 8 Strength
Self-awareness, inner strength, a connection to my feelings, the integration of my conscious and unconscious.
  • What can the counselor offer me? 7 Chariot
Encouragement to get back on the horse and move forward, and an idea of what direction to go.
  • What can I gain from working with her? 3 Empress
Creativity, self-love, and a sense of self worth.
  • What she cannot give me: 8 of Swords
She cannot free me; I have to do that myself.
  • Outcome of our work for me? 2 of Swords
Usually a negative card, but here it might mean recognizing what my choices are, examining my feelings and intuition, and then balancing those with rational decision making, so I can get off the ruin and move to a better place.
The second reading seems fairly encouraging. And the outcome card (for each reading) could be positive, even though I most often assign "negative" meanings to The Tower and the Two of Swords.

EDIT: Oephebia had some additional ideas about both readings. In summary: Make sure the counselor is a compassionate person. Avoid being rigid; I must be willing to change and move forward without looking back.

Tarot BlogHop MidFall/Samhain 2017

This season's topic suggestion from Jay Cassels was too emotionally charged for me to work with publicly. So I decided to take a different approach. I turned to a tarot spread developed by Carolyn Cushing to gain insight into how best to navigate this season. This reading allowed me to explore what sacred path I should follow, which contemplative practices would aid me on my journey, and which attitudes and behaviors would be most beneficial in undertaking these practices at this time.

To perform this reading, I divided my tarot deck into three piles: one containing the Majors and the Aces, another containing the other Number cards, and the last one containing the People cards. I shuffled each pile separately and drew one card from each to answer the following questions:

from right to left:
The Teacher, the Ten of Earth, and the Explorer of Air
from The Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert

1. What sacred path would best serve me this season?
The card drawn for this question was 5 - THE TEACHER. The image suggests embracing a mindset of continuous learning and growth. It encourages me to seek guidance by spending time contemplating nature, engaging in introspection, and learning to trust my insights. This season, the focus should be on personal development, embracing lessons from life experiences, and cultivating a deeper understanding of myself as well as a sense of oneness with creation.

2. What contemplative practice will help me move along this pathway?

The card drawn for this question was THE TEN OF EARTH, which symbolizes reflection on the cyclical changes of the seasons, ancestral wisdom, and my own legacy. It suggests engaging in practices that foster introspection and connection with my roots, both ancestral and experiential. Reflecting on the cyclical nature of life, honoring traditions, and contemplating the impact of my deeds on future generations can provide insights and a sense of purpose.

3. What attitudes and behaviors will be most helpful in undertaking this practice?

The card drawn for this final question was THE EXPLORER OF AIR, which represents curiosity, courage, and mental clarity. This season calls for achieving a mindset of openness to new perspectives and a willingness to explore different paths. By cultivating a sense of curiosity and embracing uncertainty, I will be able to navigate challenges with resilience and creativity. Focusing on my highest values and rising above negative thought patterns will be necessary to foster personal growth and self-awareness.

Since I chose to use The Gaian Tarot for this reading, it's no surprise that the reading emphasized spending time in nature as a way to experience this season. I've shifted from Carolyn's more mystical interpretations to more practical ones that can help me in personal development. This reading reminds me to reconnect with the natural world, learn from it, and trust in my own inner wisdom. Somehow, awareness of nature will go hand in hand with self awareness. I will reflect on how to develop resilience. As the season unfolds, I will keep these insights in mind and strive to walk the sacred path of learning and contemplation.

If you ever find yourself wondering about the season ahead, perhaps a tarot reading like this one can provide you with the guidance and clarity you seek.

Fast Reading

I get lost when I do emotionally charged readings for myself. So I did these three readings really fast, so I wouldn't have time to overthink. My thanks to Dianna Collins for insights into the Eight of Cups and The Hermit.

Middle row: what purpose should I strive to achieve now?
2 Wands - it's time to take action, make a choice
Emperor - be realistic and act logically, create structure
Temperance - take a moderate approach but test yourself
Conclusion: focus on immediate employment rather than dreams

Top row: how helpful to hire a career coach? (images mirror cards of middle row)
3 Wands - action taken, creating a future
King Coins - practicality and hard work lead to success
10 Coins - financial success and dream of belonging
Conclusion: it would be helpful

Bottom row: how helpful to move back to the US? (images seem to be the reverse of the middle row)
Knight Swords - think through decision
8 Cups - painful act of letting go, might be nothing more to be done here
Hermit - discern an entirely new path for yourself
Conclusion - don't rush; give this some thought

What is my soul telling me?

I read the cards from right to left.

Consider what shaped you.
Observe those who were raised differently.
Plant a seed and grow into a new person.

When I was nearly 40, my mother spoke words she hadn't uttered for decades. She threatened to kill me. A wave of nausea washed through my whole body and then a number of different thoughts flashed through my mind. Memories of my childhood fear of her resurfaced, yet I couldn't ignore the absurdity of her threat now that she was aged and diminished.

When I was growing up, my parents were really the only people in my life as we relocated incessantly. Whenever I forged connections with other children, my father's voice would erupt in a blend of anger and teary distress, admonishing, "They aren't your friends!"

Decades have passed and I've labored to ignore what Dad tried to teach me. Slowly, it dawned on me that he was right. Even if I had the energy to sow another seed of hope, I don't want to risk deceiving myself again.

Empowerment

Joanna Powell Colbert describes the paddle as a symbol of power, like a staff or a wand. The canoe represents focus and faith in yourself. The marine life and birds are allies that will help you. If you cultivate will power and clarity within yourself, you can travel confidently toward your goal. Rachel Pollack writes that one must leave the past, even past successes, behind to learn the "ultimate truth about oneself and the cosmos."

Joanna offers this question for meditation when The Canoe appears in a reading: What goal do I need to focus on?

I pulled Strength, which advises that I develop my sense of personal power.
