For years, people insisted I was mispronouncing the word 'primer, ' but actually:
The word 'primer' is pronounced the obvious way, pry-mer, when it refers to paint, explosives, or DNA research.
However, in the United States, an elementary or introductory text book is correctly pronounced prim-er even though there's only one 'm.' This is probably a survival of the pronunciation prior to the standardization of British spelling by Samuel Johnson in the 1750s.
